Storing clean energy to help save lives and the environment
In countries without an electrical grid, engineers have helped make huge improvements to everyday life.
Storing energy can be a significant challenge in some countries. Where this is the case, having electricity available at all hours of the day is difficult to achieve. An engineering project by H2GO Power, a company founded by Dr Enass Abo-Hamed, sought to address those issues.
Why does energy storage matter?
Where energy storage is a challenge, it's historically been the case that less environmentally friendly forms of energy are the easiest to use on demand. Dr Abo-Hamed saw this as a problem which engineering could fix. In the process of developing a solution, she knew she could help save lives and the environment too.
How can H2GO Power help?
The company has developed new ways to store clean energy. It has focussed on developing a hydrogen battery that would be able to store clean and renewable energy in countries without an electrical grid.
Why the interest in electricity?
Dr Abo-Hamed had always been an activist at heart. From a young age, she thought about air pollution, climate change and the effects of burning oil and gas for energy on the environment. It was only during a trip to Africa when studying for her PhD, that she realised how much of a luxury electricity was, with some hospitals only receiving power for 12 hours of the day, and households rushing to do all their cooking and reading while the electricity lasts.
Useful skills
Engineering is simply about wanting to solve a problem and having the passion and the imagination to create a solution. Dr Abo-Hamed says "it’s a combination of being creative and solving problems, and applying those two skills, while working in a team, to address some of the biggest problems humanity faces."
