Process Engineer (Nuclear Decommissioning) to 2050 Nuclear Site Surgeons
Leading the design of facilities that safely dismantle and clean up old nuclear power stations and research sites. In the future Process Engineers (Nuclear Decommissioning) will be Nuclear Site Surgeons.
Current: Process Engineer (Nuclear
Decommissioning)
This role leads the design of facilities that safely dismantle and clean up old nuclear power stations and research sites.
Many early facilities were not built with decommissioning in mind, which makes clean-ups complex and challenging.
This role develops systems that reduce radioactive waste and ensure it can be managed with minimal risk to people and the environment. The role involves applying advanced science, engineering and modelling to plan how these facilities should be built and operated.
By making decommissioning safer and more efficient, this role supports nuclear power as a low-carbon energy source while protecting communities and the planet.

2050: Nuclear Site Surgeons
Imagine if engineers could heal contaminated land, transforming yesterday’s nuclear sites into tomorrow’s parks, homes and green energy hubs.
By 2050, Nuclear Site Surgeons could be the specialists who safely dismantle and restore old nuclear facilities back to pristine conditions. They’ll use precision robot teams, molecular extractors and digital deconstruction twins that test every stage of cleanup before it begins.
They’ll deploy self-contained cleanup pods that process radioactive waste on site, neutralising chambers that break down hazardous materials and green transformation systems that convert former nuclear sites into nature reserves or renewable energy farms.
Working with scientists, regulators and communities, Nuclear Site Surgeons could ensure that hazardous sites become safe, thriving spaces, proving that even the most complex clean-ups can create brighter, cleaner tomorrows.
By 2050, Nuclear Site Surgeons could be the specialists who use precision robot teams to safely dismantle and restore old nuclear facilities.
